Recession Tactic - Avoid the Media

A friend of mine asked me what difference it makes to try the tactics in “Marketing in a Downturn”. To be fair, this friend is in an industry that has been hit hard by the economic woes, but it was a surprising comment nonetheless, because she has historically been pretty upbeat and positive.

Our conversation continued, revealing she was down because of the constant harangue about the economy and country in the media (and even from the White House).

Now this isn’t really a marketing tip (although there are plenty of positive tips in “Marketing in a Downturn” about responding to the economic downturn), but here goes: Avoid the Media! Turn off the news, stop the IV-like feed from the cable news channels, reset your RSS feed to some other subject like gardening. Maybe go for a walk (it’s spring!).

The 24-hour news cycle online, talk radio, cable TV, means two things - there is always news available; and every bit of minutiae is a HUGE story. It’s BREAKING NEWS or a DEVELOPING STORY.

Now we do need to be aware to be good marketers, business people, citizens, etc. Yet the constant barrage can dent even the most optimistic entrepreneur.

So my marketing tip: try something new, different, more intentional in your marketing and you may be surprised how opportunity exists...even in this economy. BREAKING NEWS: innovation comes from individuals and companies that take risks in the marketplace...not from the government.
